Janice Little Light -Hudetz // Visiting Scholar Week: October 19-24
Apsáalooke – Educator, Journalist & Cultural Advocate
Janice Little Light-Hudetz, an Apsáalooke woman deeply rooted in her language and culture, carries forward the teachings of her elders and family. Fluent in Crow, she upholds the traditions of clan systems, arts, and storytelling.
After graduating from Hardin High School, Haskell Institute, and the University of Montana, Janice built a career in journalism, working for newspapers across Montana, Alaska, and Illinois, and serving as a Congressional Intern in Washington, D.C. She later co-founded MotherShare of Billings, operated Center Lodge Native Arts, and helped establish the Crow Nation Language Club of Billings.
Her commitment to cultural exchange has taken her abroad through a Partners of the Americas fellowship and to Peru, where she taught beadwork to Quechua women in both cities and mountain villages. She was honored in the 1993 YWCA Salute to Women for her leadership and service.
Janice enjoys studying languages, writing, and beadwork. Married to Leo Hudetz since 1980, she is devoted to her daughter Mary and extended family. Now retired in Albuquerque, New Mexico, she continues her life’s purpose: to preserve, teach, and celebrate the Apsáalooke way of life.
