A Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), sometimes referred to as a clinical laboratory scientist or a medical technologist, is responsible for performing testing and analysis on a variety of biological specimens and reporting the results to health care providers. Medical lab scientists are employed by hospitals, clinics, research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology companies, and forensic laboratories. Graduates earning the Bachelor of Science in Biology degree with the MLS option at MSUB are immediately eligible to become nationally certified by passing the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification Exam.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Describe the cellular basis of living organisms and illustrate the functions of cellular components.
  • Describe the molecular basis of cellular function, including inheritance and genetics.
  • Describe the chemical basis of life and the biochemical reactions that make it possible.
  • Interpret data and use analytical skills to arrive at conclusions.
  • Become eligible to obtain national certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
